How does a mulled wine cooker work?
The handling of a mulled wine kettle is very simple. The first step is to put the mulled wine into the kettle. You can either use a ready-made mulled wine from the supermarket or the appropriate ingredients for a homemade mulled wine. Then switch on the cooker and set the desired temperature. After heating and drawing, the mulled wine can be served, which is made even easier by the integrated tap. The mulled wine can then be kept warm for hours, ensuring that you always have ready-made mulled wine to hand.
Advantages of a mulled wine cooker compared to a pot
- Temperature control: Mulled wine should be heated and kept warm at a very specific temperature. This can be difficult with a pot if you don't have a thermometer to hand. With a mulled wine kettle, this is simplified by an integrated temperature regulator.
- Keeping warm: Keeping warm is also easier with a mulled wine cooker. As mulled wine is often needed for several hours, it is difficult to do this in a pot. However, once the mulled wine cooker has been set to the right temperature, it requires no further maintenance.
- Easy serving: In addition, mulled wine cookers with a tap have the advantage that the mulled wine can simply be poured into the cup without any detours. In contrast, a pot requires a ladle, which can always spill something.

What is the right temperature and preparation time for mulled wine?
One advantage of a mulled wine cooker is that the temperature can be set precisely thanks to a heat regulator. But what is actually the right temperature for mulled wine?
At the beginning after pouring in the mulled wine, a temperature above the boiling point (78 °C) should be selected. After the mulled wine has boiled, a temperature between 72 and 73 °C is ideal. This allows the mulled wine to infuse and be kept warm for a longer period of time.
How long does it take for mulled wine to be ready?
After the mulled wine has reached boiling point, the mulled wine kettle is turned down (72 - 73 °C). The mulled wine should remain at this lower temperature for an hour so that the flavours can develop optimally and the alcohol does not evaporate. The mulled wine can then be served.
Which ingredients belong in a mulled wine?
There are basically two ways to prepare mulled wine. You can either use a ready-made mulled wine or mix the ingredients yourself. The first option may be better in some situations due to a lack of time. However, it should be borne in mind that conventional supermarket mulled wines are often made with cheap red wine, whose bitter flavour is masked by the addition of a large amount of sugar. The better alternative is definitely homemade mulled wine. It doesn't take much longer to make than ready-made mulled wine. But what actually goes into a mulled wine?
In general, the following ingredients can be added to the mulled wine:
- Wine: Red wine, white wine, rosé or cider, depending on the type of mulled wine you want to make. Some recipes also mix different types.
- Juice/tea: Grape juice, apple juice, blackcurrant juice, cherry juice and/or fruit tea. Juices are usually used instead of wine in non-alcoholic mulled wine, but can also be added to alcoholic mulled wine to reduce the alcohol content.
- Alcohol: Rum, orange liqueur, amaretto, liqueur 43 and much more can be used to make the famous mulled wine with a shot.
- Fruit: Oranges, lemons, apples, plums. These are best used in organic quality, as the fruit is often added to the mulled wine with the peel on.
- Spices: cloves, cinnamon, star anise, nutmeg, allspice, ginger, vanilla pods, cardamom, cocoa pods, pepper. Anything from the Christmas spice kitchen can go in here.
- Sweeteners: Candy sugar, white sugar, brown sugar, honey, agave syrup, stevia. The sweeteners can be substituted as desired.
There are so many possible ingredients that can be added to a mulled wine. The combinations of ingredients are almost endless. To make things easier, here is a recipe for a classic red mulled wine.
Have fun trying them out.
Recipe:
- 1 bottle of red wine, dry
- 1 organic orange in slices
- 2 sticks of cinnamon
- 3 cloves
- 2-3 tablespoons of sugar
Instructions:
Slice the orange and then add all the ingredients to the mulled wine cooker. Switch on the mulled wine cooker and set to a temperature above 78°C so that the mulled wine can boil.
When the mulled wine has reached boiling point (it should not boil), lower the temperature to 72°C and leave to infuse for an hour.
Then the mulled wine is ready and the Christmas party can begin!
